Experiencing The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition

By bakermotorcompany | Posted in Baker Events on Friday, February 24th, 2017 at 7:26 PM

Recently our team here at Baker Motor Company joined one of the Lowcountry’s favorite festivals, The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE). SEWE is a festival that lasts a total of three days. At the festival, people come together to celebrate wildlife and nature through fine art, conservation, education, sporting demonstrations, food, drink, and the people who honor them all.

We made an appearance at SEWE with some of our favorite models for the outdoorsman including the Land Rover Discovery Sport, GMC Denali HD and the GMC Acadia. The Birds of Prey Center accompanied us while showing off the new 2017 and 2018 models.

We are honored to be a part of such a remarkable organization and look forward to seeing what SEWE will bring to Charleston next year!

‘Tommy And Victoria Baker School Of Business’ At The Citadel Announced

By bakermotorcompany | Posted in Baker News on Thursday, February 23rd, 2017 at 8:00 PM

Baker Motor Company is pleased to announce that our Founder and CEO, Mr. Tommy Baker, has made a donation to The Citadel to enhance veteran, cadet and student business education. As a result of Mr. Baker’s monetary gift, The Citadel will be naming the new business school ‘The Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business’. Mr. Baker is grateful to each dedicated employee and loyal customer that has made this community gift possible.

Mr. Baker studied business while attending the college as a veteran student with The Citadel Class of 1972 after returning from service as an enlisted Marine.

“The education I received at The Citadel reinforced the discipline I learned in the U.S. Marine Corps, which together laid the groundwork for any business success I have experienced,” said Baker. “Both experiences reinforced my belief in the essential values of discipline and service to others. By giving back in this way, Victoria and I hope to provide future Citadel cadets and students with opportunities for success while producing principled entrepreneurs for Charleston, the Lowcountry and beyond.”

The gift, payable over a 10-year period, will fund several endowments and other resources to enhance the school’s offerings for veteran students, as well as cadets, graduate and evening undergraduate business students.

What the gift will provide

The gift facilitates the establishment of five new business professorships, one in each of the professional pathways offered by the Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business:  accounting, financial services, professional selling, supply chain management, and principled entrepreneurship.

The gift will also endow and support MBA and undergraduate-level programming in Principled Entrepreneurship and Innovation, offering business education with a strict focus on ethical decision-making as an entrepreneur.

A portion of the gift will permanently endow the Tommy B. Baker Veteran Fellowship program at The Citadel, which Baker initially established in 2014 to provide fellowships for qualified veteran students as they return to civilian life.

An endowment will focus strictly on student engagement, providing opportunities in areas such as online and executive education, internships, and career services.

A portion of the gift will be held in a capital reserve fund to support the construction and maintenance of Bastin Hall, the new academic building that will house the Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business.

“When people in the Lowcountry think of Tommy Baker, they think of business success. This transformative gift will reflect his achievements, providing resources to create programs of distinction in the Tommy and Victoria Baker School of Business,” said Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa, USAF (Retired), president of The Citadel and member of the Class of 1973. “The Bakers’ contribution will help us successfully conclude the LEAD Plan 2018, the college’s long range plan, as we continue our mission to develop principled leaders.”

The Porsche Macan – The SUV for the Good Life

The Porsche Macan – The SUV for the Good Life

By Megan Busch

I’m not a girl who knows a ton about cars. I’ve driven Jeeps all my life (as has my mother), and I really haven’t veered off that track—ever. So, I’ve teamed up with the group at Baker Motor Company to try new things, namely cars outside my norm. A few times each month, I’ll be driving one of Baker’s cars and letting you know what I think. This isn’t going to be a series of Car and Driver or Motor Trend reviews. It’s just a girl sharing her honest opinion about some nifty vehicles.

___________________

Something happened last week that’s never happened before. I am truly not a car person. I usually can only identify a car on the road as “that white SUV” or “the yellow car.” This has changed some over the past months as I’ve been writing these reviews and working with Baker regularly. However, on Friday, as I left my office, I heard a car start up. My first thought was, That sounds like a Porsche. And I was right! Each Porsche has that unforgettable sound that is truly music to the ears. (In fact, people like the sound of a Porsche so much that they created an event with the sole purpose of honoring the Porsche engine growl.)

The sound was so familiar to me because I had just taken a drive in the 2017 Macan GTS, the brand’s cross between a sports car and an SUV. Porsche has yet to let me down when it comes to driving a vehicle that’s fun and powerful (see my review on the 718 Boxster). The Macan takes that element of excitement to a new level, though, because the Macan has just the right amount of practicality and versatility to be a solid investment.

Appeal to All Stages of Life

The first thought I had when sliding into the Macan’s driver’s seat was, Man, I wish I had this car in college. Of course, it wouldn’t have fit into my ramen-noodle lifestyle at the time, but looking back, I can see how the Macan would be the ideal size for a college student. It has storage room, which is convenient for moving in and out of a dorm room twice a year; it has plenty of seating for toting friends around town; and with the Auto Stop/Start feature engaged, it consumes as little fuel as possible making trips back home efficient and affordable. The Macan is also safe. I particularly loved the lane departure warning feature. If the car comes close to veering into a parallel lane (and the turn signal is not activated), the car warns the driver to adjust his or her position on the road. Plus, let’s be honest. It has the ultimate cool-factor of the Porsche name, in addition to the powerful engine and expert handling that are more than impressive.

Porsche Macan Review

This car could easily move from the college lifestyle to that of a young professional. The navigational tools ensure that you’d never miss a meeting, and the style is sophisticated—both exterior and interior. Bringing kids into the mix? The leather seats repel stains and connectivity to your iPhone ensures that you can always play their favorite tunes. The trailer-hitch add-on makes a family day on the boat easy peasy, too.

The versatile Macan is even ideal for those transitioning into retirement. It’s the perfect cruising car, ready for a road trip at a moment’s notice, and those same safety features so important to new drivers (like ParkAssist with a reversing camera) helps to keep aging drivers safe behind the wheel, too. And, want to feel forever young? Just drive in Sport Plus mode once, and see if that does the trick.

The Best Resale Value

The Macan is an investment, and savvy shoppers know that they must spend wisely. Annually, Kelley Blue Book, the go-to source for automobile valuation, releases a list of vehicles with the best resale values. This year, Porsche topped the list in the luxury brand category. The team at Kelley Blue Book said candidly, “This one surprised even us. Not because we don’t carry Porsches around in our hearts, and not because we weren’t acutely aware that Porsche is on a 5-star roll—bringing its best products ever to the luxury and sports-car market. No, we just didn’t think that Lexus could be overthrown from wearing our Best Luxury Brand crown. But there is a new king, and the throne is well deserved. Porsche’s ability to seamlessly blend its high-performance heritage with polished luxury is broadening the company’s fan base every year, and Porsche resale value is outrageously strong—and that’s how you win the Best Resale Value Awards crown.” Porsche also landed 2017 Best Resale Value Awards in the categories of Best High-End Luxury Car for the 2017 Panamera and Best Luxury Compact SUV/Crossover for, you guessed it, the 2017 Macan.

I may be Porsche-biased, but if you’re shopping for a luxury SUV, I honestly don’t think you can do better than the Macan. Although the GTS and Turbo models are a little more expensive (starting at $76,000 MSRP), a standard Macan starts at $47,500 MSRP, which is comparable to the Mercedes-Benz GLE, the Jaguar F-PACE, and the INFINITI QX70. From its dashing good looks and lasting value to its wide-ranged appeal and brute force on the road, the Porsche Macan is an all-around winner.

The New CT6 Plug-In

By bakermotorcompany | Posted in Baker Cadillac on Friday, February 17th, 2017 at 10:27 PM

Cadillac recently announced that the first-ever 2017 CT6 Plug-In will be brought to markets in the US this spring. Bringing all-new technology to the luxury sedan is advanced plug-in technology. Designed to provide responsive, all-electric driving for most daily commutes, the CT6 maximizes fuel efficiency. Cadillac President, Johan de Nysschen said, “In the CT6, Cadillac presents a new formula for prestige luxury. The advanced Plug-In system is a key addition, providing a combination of exceptional fuel economy, crisp acceleration and strong electric-driving range.”

Having the power to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds, the battery operated Cadillac achieves roughly twice the full EV range and MPGe figures as its V6 competitors. Impressive? We think so! The top speed is 78 mph using electric power only. Adding the force of the engine, the Cadillac can reach a top speed of 150 mph. In the US market, the CT6 Plug-In will include its own unique package within the CT6 product line. Taking luxury to a new level, the Plug-In model includes numerous, optional equipment enhancing the experience of driving the CT6. This Cadillac is the epitome of electric cars.
