Tommy Baker, Owner & President
As the heart of the executive team at Baker Motor Company, Tommy Baker leads with the character and dignity that prompt many of our clients to refer to him as “one of the few southern gentlemen”. He is a visionary, innovator and a well-respected member of the Charleston community. A self-made business man, Mr. Baker sets the tone for the company’s exceptional customer service approach.
His background includes serving in different parts of the world as a member of the United States Marine Corps, followed by graduating from the venerable Citadel, and later graduating from The Harvard Business School’s intensive three year exclusive owner/president management program focused on business models and executive education.
Mr. Baker founded Baker Motor Company in 1988 as a single point Mercedes-Benz dealership. Over the course of twenty-four years, he’s grown the company to include three separate dealerships in the Charleston South Carolina area, including Baker Motor Company of Charleston, Baker Motor Company of Mt. Pleasant, and Baker Buick GMC Cadillac.
Mr. Baker has spent decades developing automobile dealerships around the southeast United States and has served as Chairman of the Mercedes-Benz Advisory Board. He remains active on several boards for both community and business, such as Yes Carolina, Southcoast Community Bank, the Board of Governors of the College of Charleston School of Business, past chairman of the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital, Annual Duke’s Children Classic Fundraiser, among others. At the College of Charleston, Mr. Baker is the Entrepreneur in Residence and has taught a much sought after senior level course for 21 years.
As a committed corporate citizen, Mr. Baker works with and supports many charitable organizations, as well as the medical and arts communities, such as, MUSC Children’s Hospital, Camp Happy Days, Darkness to Light, Hollings Cancer Center, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, Hilton Head Island Concourse D’Elegance, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Addlestone Hebrew Academy, United Methodist Relief Center, and Historic Charleston Foundation among others.
He mentors those around him and encourages community and personal growth by word, deed, and example.
