Celebrating 24 Hours Of Le Mans

July 6th, 2017 by

Our Porsche dealership was thrilled to host a midday, upscale event for our customers at Meeting at Market in celebration of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France. It was wonderful to cheer on Porsche as they took home their third consecutive win at the endurance race.

The annual race has been held in Le Mans, France since 1923. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is, as the name suggests, a 24-hour test of speed and endurance for racers.  It’s one of the three “Triple Crown of Motorsports” races held throughout the world (in the same category as the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix). The course is far from ordinary, as the race doesn’t take place on a traditional track. Instead, cars race through a course cut through the relatively small town in France. The goal of any racer is to complete the course in record time and drive for an entire day without any malfunctions of the vehicle. 2017 marks the 85th year of the iconic race, and we’re excited for Porsche to take part in the festivities. This year, the Porsche 919 Hybrid is competing for Porsche’s 3rd consecutive win in the endurance race.

The Porsche 919 Hybrid is a Le Mans Prototype with a composite fiber monocoque featuring a honeycomb aluminum core. The engine is a V4 with turbocharging providing the racecar with 900 horsepower to send it from zero to sixty in 2.2 seconds and from zero to 120 in just 4.8 seconds. For the hybrid portion, the 919 runs on a powerful lithium-ion battery.

Racing has always been important to Porsche because performance on the track leads to perfection in the production of road vehicles. Porsche explains, “It was over 60 years ago that Ferry Porsche had his vision of the sports car of the future. A vision that has become our mission. This is because motorsports gives rise to ideas that are developed, tested and enhanced under the toughest conditions until they are not only at home at the top of the podium, but also on public roads. Porsche Motorsport is very much the soul of our series production vehicles.”
