The 2017 Porsche 718 Boxster: Welcome (Back) to the Turbo-Four Era

The new 2017 Boxster marks the fourth generation since its introduction with some big news. While a 911-derived flat-six has powered Porsche’s midengined roadster for two decades, Porsche has dusted off its 718 badging in an attempt to legitimize the switch. It references the midengined four-cylinder 718 that raced with success in the 1950s and ’60s.

Despite shrinking from a six-cylinder boxer engine to a turbocharged four-cylinder, the power is up considerably: the Boxster has a 2.0-liter engine and the Boxster S has a 2.5-liter engine, and both gain 35 hp over predecessors. Mpg is TBD, but Porsche claims up to a 14 percent improvement on the European test cycle.
