The Porsche Macan – The SUV for the Good Life

By Megan Busch

I’m not a girl who knows a ton about cars. I’ve driven Jeeps all my life (as has my mother), and I really haven’t veered off that track—ever. So, I’ve teamed up with the group at Baker Motor Company to try new things, namely cars outside my norm. A few times each month, I’ll be driving one of Baker’s cars and letting you know what I think. This isn’t going to be a series of Car and Driver or Motor Trend reviews. It’s just a girl sharing her honest opinion about some nifty vehicles.

Something happened last week that’s never happened before. I am truly not a car person. I usually can only identify a car on the road as “that white SUV” or “the yellow car.” This has changed some over the past months as I’ve been writing these reviews and working with Baker regularly. However, on Friday, as I left my office, I heard a car start up. My first thought was, That sounds like a Porsche. And I was right! Each Porsche has that unforgettable sound that is truly music to the ears. (In fact, people like the sound of a Porsche so much that they created an event with the sole purpose of honoring the Porsche engine growl.)

The sound was so familiar to me because I had just taken a drive in the 2017 Macan GTS, the brand’s cross between a sports car and an SUV. Porsche has yet to let me down when it comes to driving a vehicle that’s fun and powerful (see my review on the 718 Boxster). The Macan takes that element of excitement to a new level, though, because the Macan has just the right amount of practicality and versatility to be a solid investment.

Appeal to All Stages of Life

The first thought I had when sliding into the Macan’s driver’s seat was, Man, I wish I had this car in college. Of course, it wouldn’t have fit into my ramen-noodle lifestyle at the time, but looking back, I can see how the Macan would be the ideal size for a college student. It has storage room, which is convenient for moving in and out of a dorm room twice a year; it has plenty of seating for toting friends around town; and with the Auto Stop/Start feature engaged, it consumes as little fuel as possible making trips back home efficient and affordable. The Macan is also safe. I particularly loved the lane departure warning feature. If the car comes close to veering into a parallel lane (and the turn signal is not activated), the car warns the driver to adjust his or her position on the road. Plus, let’s be honest. It has the ultimate cool-factor of the Porsche name, in addition to the powerful engine and expert handling that are more than impressive.

This car could easily move from the college lifestyle to that of a young professional. The navigational tools ensure that you’d never miss a meeting, and the style is sophisticated—both exterior and interior. Bringing kids into the mix? The leather seats repel stains and connectivity to your iPhone ensures that you can always play their favorite tunes. The trailer-hitch add-on makes a family day on the boat easy peasy, too.

The versatile Macan is even ideal for those transitioning into retirement. It’s the perfect cruising car, ready for a road trip at a moment’s notice, and those same safety features so important to new drivers (like ParkAssist with a reversing camera) helps to keep aging drivers safe behind the wheel, too. And, want to feel forever young? Just drive in Sport Plus mode once, and see if that does the trick.

The Best Resale Value

The Macan is an investment, and savvy shoppers know that they must spend wisely. Annually, Kelley Blue Book, the go-to source for automobile valuation, releases a list of vehicles with the best resale values. This year, Porsche topped the list in the luxury brand category. The team at Kelley Blue Book said candidly, “This one surprised even us. Not because we don’t carry Porsches around in our hearts, and not because we weren’t acutely aware that Porsche is on a 5-star roll—bringing its best products ever to the luxury and sports-car market. No, we just didn’t think that Lexus could be overthrown from wearing our Best Luxury Brand crown. But there is a new king, and the throne is well deserved. Porsche’s ability to seamlessly blend its high-performance heritage with polished luxury is broadening the company’s fan base every year, and Porsche resale value is outrageously strong—and that’s how you win the Best Resale Value Awards crown.” Porsche also landed 2017 Best Resale Value Awards in the categories of Best High-End Luxury Car for the 2017 Panamera and Best Luxury Compact SUV/Crossover for, you guessed it, the 2017 Macan.

I may be Porsche-biased, but if you’re shopping for a luxury SUV, I honestly don’t think you can do better than the Macan. Although the GTS and Turbo models are a little more expensive (starting at $76,000 MSRP), a standard Macan starts at $47,500 MSRP, which is comparable to the Mercedes-Benz GLE, the Jaguar F-PACE, and the INFINITI QX70. From its dashing good looks and lasting value to its wide-ranged appeal and brute force on the road, the Porsche Macan is an all-around winner.
